TRADITIONAL SKILL MEETS MODERN VISION
A Life-time in Metal
With over 30 years in the making, Ian McMillan brings a lifetime of engineering expertise into the world of fine art. Working from his Wild Edge workshop in Dorset, Ian creates distinctive, handcrafted metal sculptures that blend technical precision with artistic expression.
Each sculpture is thoughtfully designed and individually made, incorporating stainless steel and carefully selected recycled materials. The result is artwork that feels alive, capturing movement, balance, and energy, ranging from delicate small birds to bold, larger statement pieces that command attention.
At Wild Edge Sculptures, no two creations are ever the same. Every piece is crafted to meet your exact requirements, whether you desire a flawless mirror-polished finish, a textured hammered surface, or a combination of both. Ian’s deep engineering background ensures not only visual impact, but strength, durability, and impeccable finish in every sculpture.

COMMISSIONS
1. How does the commission process work?
The process is a collaborative journey. It begins with a conversation—via phone or email—where we discuss your vision, subject, size, and budget. From there, we create a design sketch and proposal for your approval. Once agreed, we begin crafting your unique sculpture, keeping you updated with progress photos. Finally, we arrange secure delivery or pickup of your finished masterpiece.
2. What can I commission? Can it be personalized?
Absolutely! While we specialize in dynamic wildlife, birds, and fish, we love unique challenges. We can create sculptures of family pets, mythical creatures, favorite flowers, or even otherworldly aliens. Personalization is key—we can incorporate specific poses, expressions, or symbolic elements to make the piece deeply meaningful to you.
3. What materials do you use, and are the sculptures suitable for outdoors?
I work primarily with recycled stainless steel, with around 95% of the material I use coming from reclaimed sources. Choosing recycled stainless steel significantly reduces environmental impact while still offering exceptional strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion, making it ideal for outdoor sculptures.
For bases and stands, I use natural wood, selected for its longevity and character. Wherever possible, the wood is responsibly sourced and can be treated for outdoor use. Over time, it will weather naturally, allowing the stand to age in harmony with its surroundings.
All materials are chosen with sustainability, longevity, and environmental responsibility in mind, ensuring each sculpture is built to last while minimising its footprint.
4. How long does a custom sculpture take, and what is the price range?
Timing depends on the projects complexity, typically ranging from 4-12 weeks. We will provide an estimated timeline with your proposal. We work closely with your budget from the outset to create a proposal that aligns with your vision and investment.
5. Do I need to pay a deposit, and what if I need to change my mind?
Yes, a 50% deposit is required to begin work, securing your place in our schedule and covering initial materials. The balance is due upon completion before delivery. We ensure you are confident in the design before we start fabrication. If you wish to make changes, minor revisions during the sketching phase are easy. Significant changes after fabrication has begun may incur additional costs, which we would always discuss and approve with you first.
