Care & Display Tips: How to Look After Your Wild Edge Sculpture

Every Wild Edge sculpture is built to last — but a few simple steps can help ensure your piece continues to look its best for years to come. Whether displayed indoors or out, these tips will help you protect the materials, preserve the finish, and keep your sculpture feeling like a focal point in your space.

1. Choosing the Right Spot

Location matters. Stainless steel is incredibly durable, but wood is a natural material and can change with its environment.

  • Indoors: Choose a spot with stable temperature and low humidity. Avoid direct, prolonged sunlight to prevent wood from drying out or fading.
  • Outdoors: If your piece is intended for the garden or exterior space, place it somewhere where it’s elevated off the ground and ideally protected from constant standing water or harsh weather extremes. Stainless steel will resist rust, but the wood may weather over time — which some collectors appreciate as a natural patina.

2. Handling With Care

Every piece is made with strong materials — but sculptures should still be handled thoughtfully.

  • Always lift from the base or most solid part of the structure.
  • Avoid applying pressure to delicate elements like wings, beaks, or limbs.
  • If moving the piece, wear gloves to keep oils and moisture from your hands off the steel or wood.

3. Cleaning Your Sculpture

Sculptures don’t need regular cleaning, but occasional care keeps them looking their best.

For stainless steel:

  • Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust.
  • For fingerprints or light marks, use a damp microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive sponges or chemical cleaners.
  • For outdoor sculptures, rinse with clean water after storms or salt exposure near the sea.

For wood bases:

  • Dust with a dry or lightly damp cloth.
  • You can apply a small amount of natural beeswax or wood oil every 6–12 months to maintain the finish (check with me first if unsure).

4. Seasonal Considerations (for Outdoor Pieces)

If your sculpture lives outside year-round:

  • Check it seasonally for leaf buildup, moisture pooling, or signs of wear.
  • In winter, you may wish to bring more delicate wood-based sculptures indoors or shelter them in a covered area.
  • If left outside permanently, let me know at time of purchase so we can factor this into the design.

5. Display Ideas

How and where you place your sculpture changes how it’s experienced.

  • Smaller pieces: Look great on a windowsill, shelf, or console where natural light highlights the steel’s texture.
  • Larger pieces: Anchor them in open spaces with clear sightlines — such as hallways, entry points, or garden paths.
  • Lighting: Gentle directional lighting (indoors) can create beautiful shadows and enhance the sculpture’s form.

Final Thoughts

Your sculpture is more than just an object — it’s a story, a process, and a piece of living craft. With just a little care, it will continue to spark connection, memory, and meaning for decades to come.
